"Education in Pakistan"
Pakistan is of great strategic concern to the US today. It is key militarily in our current war efforts, but cultural, educational, and religious issues remain at the foundation of the militant movements which threaten us. This program will focus on EDUCATION in Pakistan as the key to opportunity, prosperity, and peace. Dr. James Tebbe, Rector Designate of Forman Christian College (A Chartered University), Lahore, Pakistan, and Mrs. Veeda Javaid, Executive Director, Presbyterian Education Board Schools, Pakistan will provide a brief summary of Islamic and western education in the Indian subcontinent, the educational system of Pakistan and the role of the government in education, differences between madrasses (religious schools) and traditional learning, challenges facing educational institutions in Pakistan today, and the future of these institutions.
Dr. James Tebbe was born and raised in Pakistan and was educated at the University of Punjab after which he earned a Masters Degree from Princeton University (USA) in Near Eastern Studies. He has an Mdiv from Gordon-Conwell Seminary and a PhD degree from St. Johns University in Nottingham, England in Religious Studies. His thesis at Princeton University included a history and analysis of Islamic and western education in Pakistan. He has over 25 years of experience in administration and budget management including ten years as the International Director and CEO of a major international NGO.
Mrs. Veeda Javaid, has been Executive Director of Presbyterian Education Board (PEB) since February 1998. She is a former high school teacher with 23 years of experience teaching Physics and Mathematics. She has a Master’s degrees in both Educational Administration and Business Administration.
PEB is an autonomous Board operating under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church of Pakistan and supported by Presbyterian Church (USA) and other churches and organizations worldwide. The PEB provides support to the poor masses irrespective of caste, color, or creed with a goal of providing quality education at an affordable cost. Mrs. Javaid has worked closely with government authorities for denationalization of the Presbyterian schools in Pakistan. She is a member of the Board of Governors of Forman Christian College (A Chartered University), Chairperson of the Education Promotion Society and serves on various church boards.
